Sure, a table made from stainless steel or even painted iron or aluminum will be strong. But none of these has the same look, and wood does not rust or oxidize as metals do. Stainless steel is an exception, in that it retains its brightness. However, while there is a place for stainless steel furniture, few would want to furnish an entire dining room or sitting room using it.
Round accent tables are often used in place of end tables in the living room, taking their place at the end of sofas or next to chairs where a reading lamp may repose. Standing either on multiple legs or a pedestal, they may be quite decorative on their own, with scalloped edges, scrolled and sculpted legs, and carved sidewalls. Drawers may be skillfully built into the rounded sides of the wood accent table. Round ones may be crafted from wood, metal, wrought iron, or any combination of these. The tops may be glass, wood, mirrored or tiled.
